Preliminary Evaluation

For my preliminary task, I worked with Sam Hooper and Lorna George and we managed the task between us by giving each other different tasks to do to make sure the work load was distributed evenly. For example, Lorna was in charge of most of the filming and editing as she did not want to be a main feature to the music video. Sam was the drummer in the music video and he also helped with planning the different shots as well as making sure we had all of the props we needed to make the music video as similar to the original as possible. I was the main singer in the music video and was in charge of the video diary and also some of the editing. To plan our sequence we went through every shot of the music video and made sure what we needed to re create them using our prepared props and background. We also had the music video played next to us when we were filming so we all knew the positioning of the camera and the musicians. Theories that could be applied to this music video are Andrew Goodwin's theory that there is a specific genre to the video and iconography involved through the main artist. Also, there are multiple close-ups of the main artist which creates a recognisable star image, creating an iconic brand image. When planning, filming and editing this music video, our group had to take into account the time frame we were given to complete the task and whether it was doable, this is partly why we chose to do a video that was based in a black studio because we were able to access the drama studio at school easily and use it in our free time. I believe that our music video copy was rather successful because we planned out each shot well to make sure it ran smoothly, and learnt new editing skills which were similar/ the same to the ones in the original music video which made it look more professional. Also, our group successfully cooperated as we listened to each others ideas and merged them together as well as having individual tasks to complete. We got good feedback from our piers which found the video entertaining. However to improve this video I would correct one of the shots of myself miming which had to be filmed in an alternative place because we forgot to film it with the rest of the shots, by doing this, the video would appear more authentic and cohesive. From completing this task, I have learnt new editing skills and the necessity for planning and accuracy, along with filming more than I potentially need so I would have a wide selection of shots to choose from. I believe that by doing this in the future it would make the creation of the music video a lot smoother and less stressful, along with a quality final outcome. The creation of this compared to the film opening was different due to the need for significantly more shots in a small space of time and the need for it to be accurate enough to be in time with the music. However is it similar in  the sense that the shots that were filmed had to be re-filmed multiple times in order to get them just right. I believe that as a group member, my strengths are that I am able to lead a group and come up with many ideas, but a weakness may be that I want to follow my vision quite clearly and how I am quite a perfectionist. Looking at the music videos for other groups I believe that the most successful groups were the 'Call Me Maybe' group and the 'We Don't Talk Anymore' group as their videos were well executed and of good quality.
