Carol Vernallis' Theory

Carol Vernallis is known for her theory based on music editing and her theory is based around 4 key concepts: - narrative
                - editing
                - camera movement/ framing
                - diegesis

Narrative: The narrative could reflect the lyrics in the song but may also seem disjointed from the music. The narrative could also be displayed as a montage.

Editing: The video may disrupt conventions of continuity editing and could break the 180 degree rule.

Camera movements and framing: One of the key features in a music video, and the camera may move in time with the lyrics.

Diegesis: This is the setting of the music video and actions in the music video may be disrupted.

This is the music video for the song 'Bang Bang', sung by Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj. In this music video there are lots of shots to make the video appear and upbeat and quick paced. The framework continues to pan onto the artist with a lot of camea movement in time with the beat of the song. There are 216 shots within the 4 minute 22 second video.
